NTU MUN

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore’s premier IT Institute conducted its Annual Model United Nations Conference from 5th to 7th February 2010. The conference drew in over 300 students from over 10 countries, participating as both delegates and press corps. The conference was held at the famous Nanyang Executive Center which has been known for hosting prestigious events in the past.  Attending NTU MUN is every MUNer’s dream, be it experienced or rookie. Apart from being an international MUN, it is also widely renowned for advocating an extremely high level of debate.

Sixteen delegates from Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram accompanied by Mrs. Archana Pental (HOD Political Science) attended this conference. Among them twelve were delegates and four were reporters in the Press Corps.  Ex DPS alumni also constituted the Executive Board.

The three-day conference, though grueling was an amazing experience. Five of the United Nations’ most critical bodies were simulated – Security Council, General Assembly, World Health Organization, African Union. NTUMUN also took a leap by introducing the Futuristic Security Council. This simulation of the Security Council required delegates to debate and brainstorm on possible issues of the future. Issues like narco-terrorism, armed conflict over scarce resources, protecting the Arctic, formation of a supra national body for Africa & pandemic management were the key issues taken up for discussion. In simulation there were four news organizations, of the Associated Press, Xinhua News Agency, Der Spiegel and Al Jazeera. The 4 media houses analyzed and reported on exhilaratingly myriad councils, debates, emergencies and goings on of the three days of the event.

As international delegates, a lot was expected from us. Our whole delegation worked relentlessly from dawn right up till midnight to meet deadlines and complete the abundant research. Of course, we did not abstain from eating or drinking; we enjoyed hearty dinners every night before resuming with our research work, et al. Media has always played a significant role in shaping decisions; and so it played an important role at NTU MUN. Members of the International Press were also required to stay up till late hours to finish compiling the newsletters to be distributed the following day. But all the efforts were rewarded.

The delegation from Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram did very well and was applauded by each and every delegate attending the closing ceremony at the Tan Chin Tuan Lecture Theatre. The awards won by our delegates are:
