GOLD MEDAL WINNER IN THE ASSET EXAM

ANAMAY CHATURVEDI

Anamay Chaturvedi, a student of Class X – H has won the Gold Medal for outstanding performance in the ASSET Exam, a skill based diagnostic test taken by over 300,000 + students annually from more than 800 schools.

The Overall ASSET topper in Class X. Ananmay is a Blue Blazer holder and is also a member of EXUN the School Computer Club.

BUDDING WRITER OF DPS R.K.PURAM

Young writer, Prateek Arora with the Principal of his school, DPS R.K.Puram, Dr.D.R.Saini, Vice Principal, Mrs.Shobha Mehta and his parents.

Prateek Arora, an 11th standard student in DPS RK Puram recently released the Reviewer's Edition of his first book “Village No. 1104”. The book revolves around a professor- Abhimanyu and 4 students- Sid, Priya, Rishabh and Murari who face different kinds of pressures in their lives. This pressure takes them away from the path they had always dreamt of. Circumstances alter the course of their life and they find themselves in Village 1104 where they realize what they were born for. The book shows how the children turn a village that was not even significant enough to get a name of its own, into a name known by everybody in India. It demonstrates the difference between following YOUR dream and following SOMEONE ELSE’S. It shows the difference between the road YOU want to go on and the road THAT WAS SHOWN TO YOU.

Prateek is one of the youngest authors in India. His desire to voice the mindset of the children at his stage and to bring about a change in the society have been the reason for writing this book. He has been associated with NGOs working for street children and has now formed his own NGO - SPIRIT. He has also received a blue coat and a blue tie from his school for academic excellence and was recently a part of the "Runners Up" team all over Asia in the Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition held by ATLANTIS. Apart from his contribution to society, Prateek is also a C++ programmer and a trained Western Vocal Singer.

NATIONAL WINNERS OF - MY CITY MY HISTORY

In the month of October, FOX History and Entertainment channel in association with INTACH, organized an essay competition; the topic: “My city my history” and one had to find out a unique fact about our city. The last date of submission was 31st of December, 2009 and they received well over five thousand entries from across the country. Many students from DPS R.K Puram participated. One of the five National winners, Rishita Ray of class VII, who had written on the history of Delhi Police and one regional winner, Mollika Basu of class IX who wrote on Howrah station, Kolkata, were from DPS R.K Puram. The award ceremony was held on the 10th of February, 2010 at the Lodhi Gardens. It was a fun filled affair, starting with a Heritage walk led by Ms Swapna followed by a semi-formal award ceremony. The heads of INTACH and FOX History were present and the Chief Guest was Ms Anjali Menon. There were six regional winners and only one national winner from Delhi. As always, DPS R.K Puram took home the top honors, the only school in the whole country to have one regional as well as one national winner. It was an interesting and enriching experience.

Shreya Ishita at the Fact Universal Teen Pageant

Shreya Ishita, a student of Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram who has recently passed out ( 2009 batch), has brought laurels to the school when she became THE FIRST RUNNER UP at FACT UNIVERSAL TEEN PAGEANT.

Fact Universal Teen Pageant is a beauty pageant of National Repute started by the FACT ENTERPRISES this year. It gives a platform to young girls to showcase their talent, beauty and intelligence in front of a national as well as International audience. Diana Hayden- Miss World 1997 was the brand ambassador of the pageant.

After rigorous auditions and selection process judged by Diana Hayden and Rocky S- a well known fashion designer, Shreya made it among the top 25 contestants chosen from amongst almost twenty-five thousand girl participants from all over the country. She was a part of 10 episode long reality shoot on Channel 9x which featured the grooming process the contestants underwent for the finale. During her stay in Mumbai for the shoot, Shreya along with other contestants was trained in different areas of fashion by people well known in their respective fields. Ramp walk training was given by Alison Kanuga- a name that does not require any introduction in the fashion world. Contemporary dance training was given by Akash Karnataki ,a well known Bollywood choreographer. During the pageant several subtitles were given to contestants. Shreya was crowned ‘Miss Beautiful Hair’ for her naturally healthy hair.

The finale was a huge star-studded event held in Mumbai and judged by Diana Hayden, Rocky S, Sangith Sivan- Bollywood and Malayalam film director, Alison Kanuga and Madhu Mantena- the producer of Ghajini. It was telecast Live On Channel 9x. Shreya was among the 5 girls who based on their performances in the talent round were chosen to perform live on the finale. After several rounds of catwalk, interaction with the judges and question and answer round Shreya was declared the first runner up. She thus proved her talent and intelligence and was crowned by Diana Hayden.

Based on her performance Shreya will participate in an International Teen Beauty Pageant to be held in U.S.A next year. Currently Shreya is fortunate to have many offers from the glamour world as a result of winning the pageant. She however gives education more importance and is currently a freshman pursuing an undergraduate degree in Physics and Economics at Tufts University in Boston on scholarship.

We wish her luck for her future endeavours and hope to see her become well-known in whichever field she chooses to go to.

DPS R.K.PURAM STUDENTS WIN INTER- SCHOOL QUIZ ON ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE CHANGE

IYCN(ndian outh Climate Network), 350.org, and Seeds India in collaboration with Sanskriti School, Chanakyapuri organized an Inter School Environment Quiz, QryptiQ, at Sanskriti School, on the 23rd of November, exactly 2 weeks before the Copenhagen Summit to involve the students in understanding and joining the movement against climate change.

After qualifying the written quiz, only six teams were selected for the final round on the stage.

Two teams from DPS R.K.Puram comprising Samiran Mukherji, Nayan Agarwal and Prakhyat Roop , Akshat Mishra won first and second prizes respectively in the final mock quiz segment.

Ten schools with 3 teams each participated in the quiz in the first round.

DPS R.K.Puram students win Dr.Amidas Goradia Debate

On the 3rd December 2009, the Indian School hosted its annual Dr. Amidas Goradia English Debate. Students from 14 schools including D.P.S. Vasant Kunj, Ryan International, Sanskriti were asked to debate on various topics such as “Pakistan is just a piece of land” and “President Obama deserves the Nobel prize”.

The D.P.S. R.K.Puram comprising of Aditya Mitra, Trisha Gupta, Kanav Mayar bagged the Rolling trophy for the 2nd year running. Trisha Gupta was also awarded the “Best Speaker” award.

Award for Suramya Sharma of XI-P

Miss Suramya Sharma, a student of class XI-P at DPS RKPuram was awarded with late Shri Ambalal Hingad Smriti Samman at a function organized by Jagmag Deep Jyoti magazine at Alwar (Raj.) on 8th Nov '09. She has received an appreciation certificate, momento, shawl and Rs. 1100/- cash.

This program was organized on the beginning of silver jubilee year, of the monthly magazine "Jagmag Deep Jyoti". Suramya performed a Kathak Dance in front of the literary legends arrived from all over the country. Suramya was awarded for her multidimensional contribution in the field of literature (story writing), Kathak Dance and music.

Times NIE "Student of the year" Award

Arpit Bajaj of class IX-M of Delhi Public School, R.K Puram won the Times NIE "student of the year" Award. He received a trophy, a certificate and a cheque of Rs. 1000 as a prize. The award was given on the basis of academic performance, extracurricular activities and overall personality development. Students from all over India participated in the quest for this prestigious award. Arpit is very grateful to the school for its unconditional help and support.

Hattrick for D.P.S R.K.Puram at the Harvard Club Debate

Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram won the annual Harvard Club debate held on 4th November 2009 at Tagore International School, for the third consecutive year. Their team comprising of Aditya Mitra, Akshay Goel and Shreya Prakash was awarded the ‘Best Group’ prize. The motion for the debate was “Minimum legal age for drinking should be reduced to 18 years” and was hotly debated by the participants of 16 schools which attended the event. The panel of judges lauded the efforts of all participants who discussed diverse issues like morality, ethics, drunken driving and even freedom of choice as they battled to defend their stands and gave kudos to Delhi Public School R.K.Puram which has won this debate every year since its inception in 2007.

World’s most prestigious Co and Extra curricular international programs Achivement

Anand Khare (XI – I) secured admission into one of the world’s most prestigious Co and Extra curricular international programs “EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR GIFTED YOUTH, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, SUMMER INSTITUTE June 2009 with 100% scholarship. He successfully completed the program, gaining huge popularity amongst his peers and mentors and with his Professor. At Stanford, Anand not only enjoyed his studies but also won tennis tourneys, played baseball and rugby with his mentors and popularized cricket within Stanford circles.

During the course field trips, Anand visited NASA Ames Research Center, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, San Francisco Technology Exploratorium etc. The course Professor, Dr Gary Oas wrote in his evaluation report, “It was a pleasure having Anand in my course. Anand showed great interest in the material and enjoyed being challenged. Indeed, it seemed as though his enjoyment would increase with the difficulty of the problem. His work was some of the cleanest I’ve seen at this level; it was logically laid out and easy to follow – the mark of an excellent scholar. Anand has a thorough understanding of Metric Formulation of Special Relativity, Schwarzschild Geometry and a good introductory knowledge of General Relativity and Black Holes. When encountering general relativity in the future, Anand will have little trouble conquering this mathematically dense theory. Anand will excel in whatever field he chooses – I hope that it is Physics.”

Anand is a NTSE national scholar and JSTSE 1nd rank holder in the school. He has won many Gold medals ranging from inter school to international level math, science and IT competitions. He has represented India at Tunza Int’l UNEP conferences at US, Japan and Norway.

The National Talent Search Examination

The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a national level scholarship programme in India to identify and nurture talented students. The scheme is open to students of Indian nationality. Only students studying in Class VIII are eligible to appear for the selection process. As it is organized by an official body (NCERT), it is widely regarded as the most prestigious examination at the high school level in the country.

A scholarship of &s. 500 per month, under the present scheme, is awarded to the selected candidates for pursuing courses in sciences and social sciences up to the doctoral level and in professional courses like medicine and engineering up to the second-degree level.

Any regular student studying in class VIII in a recognized school situated in the NCT of Delhi and has secured an aggregate of 60% marks (55% in case of reserved category) or more in class VII examination is eligible.
Candidates are required to pass the State Level and National Level Examinations and clear the Interview before being awarded the scholarship.

Junior Science Talent Search Examination 2008-2009

The objective of this scheme is to identify the most brilliant students in the state in Class 9 and to recognize their scientific aptitude by giving them scholarships and certificates, so that they may hone their talent in whatever field of higher education they wish to pursue. The scholarship gives them an edge over the others for future selection in the streams of their choice.

Any regular student studying in class IX in a recognized school situated in the NCT of Delhi who has secured an aggregate of 65% marks (60% in case of reserved category, SC/ST/PH) or more in the class VIII examination is eligible. Candidates must pass a written exam and clear an interview before being awarded the scholarship.

The Scholarship of Rs. 2000/- for JSTS and Rs. 1000/- for Open Merit is distributed in two installments.

One hundred and fifty eight students have been selected on merit in the Junior Science Talent Search Examination 2008-2009 from all the schools in Delhi. Twenty one students have been selected from DPS R K Puram alone, the largest number from any school.

The topper, Aman Agarwal is a student of DPS R K Puram. Three of the top seven positions are also from DPS R K Puram.
