RAMAYANA IN THE MODERN CONTEXT

Delhi Public School, RK Puram, and H.T. NEXT, in a first-of-its-kind joint venture, staged the dance-drama "Ramayana in the Modern Context" based on the legendary epic, on 17th, 18th I 19th and 20th April, 2006 at the T alkatora Stadium.

Ramayan is one of the most profound spiritual texts of India, a perfect blend of wisdom, compassion and human experience. Its universal principles can be applied to every aspect of our lives. And today, while the impact of the west is predominant in our lives, it is our earnest endeavour to keep our rich cultural heritage alive in the minds of the younger generations. For, we firmly believe that modernization should be intrinsically linked to our roots. This/portrayal is also an effort to retrieve humanity from its materialistic shell and expose it to love and virtue, and to tell the audience that the need of the hour is not only to read the Ramayana, but also live by its cherished ideals. Hence the title 'Ramayana in the Modern Context'.

The play has been directed by the.. theatre personality Ms. Meenal, with the assistance of Mr. Shivam and Ms. Shefali, and the script has been written by Dr.Asha Lata Pandey, Head of the Sanskrit Deptt of DPS RK Puram. In fact, for the first time, both Hindi and Sanskrit have been used in a school production, for the stage-adaptation of the play. The music has been composed by Mr. Vinod Bahadur Rai and Mr. Gagan's team, light and sound is by Modern Stage, costumes have been designed by Ms. Babita, and the sets are by Mr. Anubhav Arora.

The main characters of the play are Maithily (Arushi Chopra), Dadi (Era Bali), Vishnu Bhagwan (Shreyansh Chauhan), Ram (Aditya Maheshwari), Sita (Ragini Lalit), Laxman (Kushal Kishore Gupta), Dashrath (Dhruv Malik), Ravana (Ayan Datta and Shubh Aggarwal). The cast comprises of 150 students, in the age group of 11 to 16 years.

As Dr. Radha Krishnan once wrote, "The future has to be built on the foundations laid in the past and the present." This is what we hope to accomplish through this performance. And may our sincere efforts be crowned by a reawakening of our souls, through a world of poetry and music, presented by the students of DPS RK Puram.
